Nutley, NJ

History
The first settler of European descent in the area was Bastian Van Giesen. His home, Vreeland Homestead, is now the headquarters of the Nutley Women's Club. He and other Dutch settlers first arrived in the late 1600s. Nutley was known in the early 1700s for its brownstone quarry. Many immigrants, espeically those of Irish and Italian descent, found their first jobs here. The presence of the Third River stimulated the development of numerous mills along its shores. In the latter part of the 19th century, an artists colony developed on a dead-end road called The Enclosure. Artists like Frederick Dana Marsh and Michael Lenson took up residence here. In the 1960s, the arts were represented in another way when an upstart band called Aerosmith played at the Nutley prom.

There are nine parks in the Nutley park system. Within these municipal facilities, there are hiking trails, bridges and modernized playgrounds. Picnicking is available at Booth Park and Kingsland Park. The parks also offer an abundance of athletic fields. There are four soccer fields and 12 baseball fields. The renovated Nutley East Little League Field now features new scoreboards, fencing and bleachers. Two parks have tennis courts, and tennis lessons are offered to individuals five years old and up. Nutley also maintains a roller hockey rink.
