Clifton, New Jersey, is a city with about 85,000 residents in northeast New Jersey. This Passaic County community offers easy access to New York City via Interstate 80. The campus of Montclair State University lies just to the west.
The first immigrants of primarily Dutch and English descent arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The agrarian nature of the economy did not give way to industrialization until after the Revolutionary War. The Morris Canal addressed the area's transportation needs in the time before the railroad. It was discovered that two mules that could pull three tons on a flat road could move a 50-tone canal boat just as readily.
The Clifton portion of the canal was built in the 1820s using Dutch and Irish farmhands and immigrants. The full Morris Canal was over a hundred miles long, and it was entirely dug by hand. The railroad arrived in the 1850s, although the canal remained in operation until 1924.
